Platforms are not valid standing space, and neither are "open" trap doors. Closed trap doors, however, do qualify. So in your first picture, you have a 4-block wide chunk of solid standing space, but in the second picture, you only have 2 disconnected pieces, which is not enough.

As the others have said it is simply the dirt walls that are preventing the spawning and it being valid. Housing can only be valid if you place the walls and and bottom/sides/roof (as far as I've noticed). Good luck fixing it and enjoy Terraria.
