My Ruger American Rimfire compacts replaced a Savage FV-SR and Marlin XT. The 18" barrel, for me, is the happy medium between the 16" on the Savage and 22" on the Marlin. The trigger, while externally similar to the Savage (and Marlin) is much easier to tune without the need for after-market parts. It pains me to say this, because I'm a huge Savage fan, but I'd choose the Ruger American out of those two. The trigger on the Axis is horrible (the Axis II acc-trigger is much better), the bolt handle feels cheap, the stock is extra flimsy and cheap feeling, etc. The rifles shoot, but they are just very cheap feeling overall.
